CALAMBA CITY, Laguna - The city government of Lipa declared seven (7) barangays as African Swine Fever (ASF) free out of its 14 barangays affected by the virus.
The seven barangays are Bolbok, Malagonlong, Kayumanggi, Calamias, Mabini, San Francisco, and Lumbang.
Lipa City Mayor Eric B. Africa announced the declaration after the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Animal Industry (DA-BAI) through the Bantay ASF sa Baranggay Program instituted the sentinel protocol.
The protocol states the continuous cleaning and disinfection of identified ASF-infected areas for at least 30 days and regular surveillance and testing activities to ensure the absence of virus strains.
After the mandated 30 day period, sentinel pigs are deployed. If no outbreaks detected in the area within the required 40 day period, the subject barangay can be locally declared ASF-free by the concerned local government unit (LGU).
However, repopulation activities must still be regulated by the LGU and the DA.
According to Regional Livestock Program Focal Person Dr. Jerome G. Cuasay, the DA Region IV-CALABARZON supports barangays under quarantine protocol by providing sentinel pigs.
“Lipa City is the first to be partially released from quarantine and we hope that it will continue not only in Lipa and our region but throughout our country,” Dr. Cuasay said. (PIA-4A with report from Radel F. Llagas, DA-4A RAFIS)
