Logic and cheap Covid-19 drugs

We’re in a circle of controversy on Ivermectin, Lianhua, and other cheap drugs to cure that curse of a malady called Covid-19-21. Our quest for a cheap effective drug is brought about by the costly remdesivir an antiviral Covid-19 candidate drug at $520 (Php 25,000) per dose for private insurance and $390 for government use (NPR News, 6/20/20). Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, however, was able to procure 2000 vials for Php13M or about Php6,500 per vial. Remdesivir, a drug used for the Ebola virus does not guarantee recovery from Covid-19 but shortens the time frame of the sickness by helping a patient recover faster according to Dr. Lacuna. If that is the case, why spend so much on a drug that would not guarantee a cure?

Other drugs that were used to treat coronaviruses such as dexamethasone, a corticosteroid drug for asthma and allergies have also questionable efficacy. The National Institutes of Health, which provides guidelines for known COVID-19 treatments, recommends using dexamethasone only for severely ill patients who are being administered oxygen. The panel said that other corticosteroids — prednisone, methylprednisolone, and hydrocortisone — may be used if dexamethasone is not available but that their effectiveness isn’t clear.

Convalescent plasma is another method used to treat coronavirus. The liquid part of the blood after one has recovered from Covid-19 produced an antibody in plasma. The FDA, which approved the emergency authorization of convalescent plasma Aug. 23 for hospitalized COVID-19 patients, said side effects for patients who receive it can include allergic reactions, lung damage, heart rhythm problems, and blood clots. Health experts say that although plasma is used for a variety of illnesses, its effectiveness against COVID-19 is unclear (Dallas Morning News, 10/13/20)

Enough not to mention other drugs that were recommended by your favorite US President Trump, hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine. He even employed health practitioners to walk around the whole continent of America endorsing these drugs.

If most of the mentioned drugs’ effectiveness is doubtful why would Health experts not recommend cheaper drugs for a clinical trial in a locality? What would stop people from experimenting on drugs such as Ivermectin and Lianhua when one is on the verge of his last breath or mental disorder? Are drugs controlled by giant pharmaceuticals and pharmaceuticals controlling politicians for profit?

If Ivermectin has dangerous side effects, why would hospitals and genius doctors don’t allow Lianhua for clinical trials when few are opposing this drug? Would it be because they will not be profiting out of the cheap drugs?

These are logical questions needing logical answers. If one feels it's time to make your last will why not experiment and try 20 red chilis or gulping one liter of virgin coconut oil daily that may salvage you from death? Why not try Lianhua or Ivermectin when you can’t be admitted by hospitals? . Your kidney might be damaged but you are alive and still kicking the damn dialysis machine.

If those politicians and celebrities endorsing ivermectin want to prove for themselves the effectiveness of these drugs, they can, in front of televisions take the drug and let the people watch them struggle, survive or die with the scientific community watching in horror. This is more rational than blabbers.

How do I look at the rationality of the present crop of vaccines to treat covid-19? It is very logical and scientific and I also believe they are effective. The question now for a poor country like ours is how successful can we negotiate timely deliveries of these vaccines and inoculate our countrymen in due time to arrest the increasing number of deaths.

What is more logical than these drugs is home alone. Avoidance and rigorous discipline of a 100% non-exposure to risk (virus) rather than experiment later on with ineffective drugs. If you know, you can be exposed to coronavirus, wear a helmet and protective gear rather than relying on luck. We have better options my friends that are more logical, sound, and tested ways of avoiding these Satan-created viruses.
