LOS BAÑOS – As Laguna started the implementation of enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) on Monday, Los Baños recorded 20 new recoveries, bringing the town’s total tally to 746.
In its Facebook page, the municipal government also reported only one new Covid-19 case, a 25-year-old woman living in Barangay Bayog but working outside of Los Baños.
The municipal government said the woman had prior exposure to a confirmed case and has since developed mild symptoms.
She is currently in a "strict home isolation", and contact tracing has been completed.
Los Baños has a total of 923 Covid-19 cases since the pandemic started in March last year, 60 of which coming from Barangay Bayog.
The young woman is the sixth active COVID-19 case in Bayog.
At present, Los Baños has 140 active Covid-19 cases and 37 deaths.
Aside from Laguna, Metro Manila as well as three other nearby provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, and Rizal have been placed under a long-week ECQ until April 4 due to containing the rising Covid-19 cases.
Mouthwash vs. Covid-19
Meanwhile, former Los Baños vice mayor and now councilor Baby Sumangil-Evangelista on Monday distributed 110 bottles of Betadine mouthwash to municipal health officer Alvin Isidro and to social welfare and development officer Hanna Lavina.
Citing results from a recently concluded clinical trial, Evangelista said the mouthwash can be used as a treatment for Covid-19.
"Ayon po sa clinical trial, ang pagmumog at paglinis ng ilong gamit ng Betadine ay inererekomenda sa taong positibo sa Covid-19 pati na rin ang kanilang posibleng paghawa para pigilin ang pagkalat ng Covid-19 (According to a clinical trial, gargling and nose cleaning using Betadine is recommended to a person tested positive for Covid-19 as well as their possible transmission to stop the spreading of COVID-19)," she said.
Among those who conducted the local trials were Dr. Ledoovico Ilag and Dr. Isagani Padolina, both distinguished alumni of the University of the Philippines campus here.
Ilag was a cum laude graduate at UPLB in biology and obtained his doctorate degree in microbiology at the University of Tennessee.
Padolina, on the other hand, graduated at UPLB with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and got his doctorate degree in botany and phytochemistry at the University of Texas-Austin.
"Napakaswerte natin at ipinaabot sa inyong lingkod kaagad ang impormasyong ito (We are very lucky that this information has been given immediately to yours truly)," Evangelista said.
She called on those who have yet to receive their Covid-19 vaccines to use the Betadine mouthwash for the meantime.
"Habang wala pa tayong bakuna sa ngayon ay nakikiusap po kami na gumamit tayo nito (While we still do not have any vaccine as of now, we request all of you to use this)," Evangelista continued.
Evangelista also urged everyone who wants to help in distributing Betadine mouthwash bottles to the front-liners and those experiencing Covid-19 symptoms to reach out to her office. (PNA)
