In my previous postings, I’ve highlighted that risk is equal to Exposure plus Vulnerabilities over Capacity. If one is exposed to a hazard (virus) you’re getting infected will depend on how risk-takers you are. When your work requires constant exposure to a group of people, then the chance is high that you’ll get infected (front liners).
A local chief executive who attends religiously to the needs of his constituents with precautions thrown out the air is highly vulnerable to infection. If that local executive is cautious and reduced his exposure to the public, he or she will have a lesser probability of contracting the virus.
Let us take for example Claire De la Fuente, her son said that they almost always isolate themselves from the public and usually stay in-door. He said that the probable culprit is one of their household helpers who might have gotten the virus from the outside and brought it home to them-being both him and his mother positive to Covid-19.
In the case of President Erap, his son Jinggoy said that his father might have gotten the virus from one of the visitors who frequently visit his father.
These are examples of two different cases of exposure. If the exposed senior citizen is protected by a mask or face shield (reducing vulnerabilities) at home whenever one is with the household helper or visitor, the chance of getting infected is smaller compared to unprotective ones.
If your place is an island, controlling people getting in and out would reduce exposure to the virus: ex. Guimaras, Tawi-Tawi, Basilan, and Batanes are currently free from the virus.
The problem now is if you are a risk-taker. If you dare bravely not to don a mask or face shield, attend group gatherings such as parties with more than 10 people, eat boldly in an enclosed restaurant, and stay there more than one hour, the activity involves shouting, mingle with people and children who were unvaccinated then you are a risk-taker. On the contrary, when you observed rigid protocols then the chance of getting infected is nil.
If the locality has zero positive, then get out and mingle with people. With the highly infectious variants, however, it will be unwise to be a risk-taker. Thus, you’re getting infected depends on how you look at risk at face value.
