TRECE MARTIRES CITY– Following her successful campaign at the Tokyo Olympics, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz is expected to move into her new home in Barangay Kaybagal Central, Tagaytay City.
Aside from a brand new 13-seater Foton Transvan, gold medalist Diaz also received a 220 square meter house and lot as part of her incentives from the Philippine Olympic Committee.
With an estimated worth of P5-M, the two-storey property includes three bedrooms and an estimated 180 square meter total floor area.
“Sobrang thankful ako sa unexpected blessings na ibinigay sa amin. As an athlete, goal talaga namin manalo ng gold para sa Pilipinas,” said Diaz, who bagged the country’s first Olympic Gold after dominating the 55-kg women’s division.
[I am very thankful for the unexpected blessings given to us. As an athlete, our goal is to win for the Philippines.]
Diaz’s triumph at the Olympics is predicted to attract more interest in weightlifting as a sport, which prompted talks of its inclusion in the Department of Education-led Palarong Pambansa.
“Syempre sobrang saya,” Diaz said of this development. “But we have to think long term [kung] paano i-program ito dahil hindi pwede isasama pero walang programa. We have to think long term upang ma-sustain at maipasok ang weightlifting sa Palarong Pambansa,”
[Of course, I’m very happy. But we have to think long term because we cannot include it [in Palarong Pambansa] without a program. We have to think long term in order to sustain and include weightlifting in the Palarong Pambansa.]
The weightlifting champion’s new Tagaytay home is just one of the few properties given by the Philippine Olympic Committee.
Soon, Diaz will be neighbors with other Filipino Olympians–boxers Nesthy Petecio, Eumir Marcial, and Carlo Paalam–who witnessed the groundbreaking for the construction of their own homes in nearby Barangay San Jose.
For the community, the possibility of having world class athletes for neighbors is a welcome sight after witnessing the turn over ceremony for the weightlifting champion’s new home.
“We are very honored [to have her] dahil mayroon na akong kapitbahay na first time gold medalist para sa Pilipinas,” said resident Roger Camacho.
[We are very honored to have her because I now have a neighbor who is a gold medalist.] (PB)
