Elderly Week, celebrates in Batangas City

BATANGAS CITY - There are 10 centenaries in the city or those aged 100 and above were given recognition by the Batangas city government in the virtual program conducted by the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) on October 11 in celebration of 2021 Elderly Week.

They are Rosela Cortez, (104 years) of barangay Sta Rita Aplaya, Lorenza De Guzman, (104 years) of Cuta, Macaria Mandigma, (102 years), from Tingga Labac, Cresencio Galicia (102), of Mabacong , Liwanag Atienza, (102), Barangay 11, Ma. Belen Caedo, (101), Barangay 3, Belen Maligalig, (101) of Barangay 8, Lucio Dimaano, (101) of Kumintang Ilaya, Leonarda Aya (101) of Calicanto and Eugenia Abela, (101) of Talahib Pandayan.



Also honored were six centenarians (100 years old) in the city namely Epitacia Pentino of barangay San Isidro, Selvina Aclan from San Pedro, Regina Javier of barangay Ilijan, Agripina Amul from Banaba South, Rosita Sadiangcolor of Paharang West and Reynalda Dilag of Ballet.

They will receive financial assistance and other benefits including assistive physical devices, medical assistance and food assistance from the local government in addition to a P100,000.00 cash gift from the national government.



Tema ng selebrasyon ay “ Mahalaga si Lolo at Lola Ngayong Pandemya”. Itinakda ng batas ang unang linggo ng Oktubre ng bawat taon bilang Linggo ng Katandaang Pilipino (Elderly Week) kung saan binibigyan ng pagpapahalaga ang mga pangunahing mamamayan.

The theme of the celebration is “Grandpa and Grandma Are Important In This Pandemic”. The law designates the first week of October of each year as Elderly Week where key citizens are valued.



In a message delivered by Mayor Beverley Dimacuha, she said that senior citizens can help a lot in various fields, be it economics or character formation and even faith.

He also stressed that the service and success they have contributed to the community is invaluable.

“Ito ang araw ng pagbibigay-respeto sa mga senior citizen dahil kung wala kayo wala din ako. Malaki ang pagmamahal ko sa inyo dahil kayo ang nangangaral sa amin at pumupuna sa maling nagawa, kaya malapit ang loob ko sa inyong mga senior citizen” said the Mayor.

He added that he and Congressman Marvey Marino will work together to implement programs that respond to the needs and take care of the welfare of key citizens especially during this time of pandemic.

According to City Council for the Elderly President Vilma Dimacuha, she wants the safety of all senior citizens so she encouraged those who have not yet received the COVID-19 vaccine to get vaccinated and follow the health and safety protocols against COVID enforced by city ​​government.

Psychologist Maria Teresa Blanco provided important information on mental health awareness, to overcome the challenges that senior citizens may face during a pandemic.

The virtual celebration also featured a laying contest in which four senior citizens participated.

Lola Dulce Acuna of Conde Labac was crowned champion, who will receive a prize of P10,000 cash, 1st place is Severina Coloma of Libjo who will win P7,000 cash, 2nd place is Lucila Leycano of Ilijan, who will take home P5,000 cash and 3rd Teresita Roldan of Barangay 6 who will receive a P 3,000 cash prize.

CSWDO partnered with the Office of the Senior Citizens Association (OSCA) and the City Council for the Elderly (CCE) in administering the said celebration.
