LUCENA CITY - Lucena city polls, if held today, would have Mark Alcala winning hands down the city's plum elective post. So, pre-poll surveys would have it-- other contenders would have difficulties on their hands convincing the local electorate of what they'd argue as a need for a breath of fresh air, maybe, a change in style of governance for this highly urbanized urban center of Southern Tagalog that boasts of over 98% literacy rate.
Tal pueblo, tal gobierno, as the late Dr. Jose P. Rizal would have it.
Alcala doesn't have to offer anything new. Or any earth-shaking mode of running the affairs of the city government-- the Alcalas, as any disinterested observer can surmise, have a political franchise firmly embedded, no way a newbie can wrench the reins of power from an Alcala.
Incumbent Mayor Roderick Alcala would be fielded as vice mayoral bet for his son, Mark, who is seeking to replace his father in the May 2022 local polls. Mark, 25, is the eldest son of Roderick, now on his last term as local chief executive.
An elective post can be a legacy that a father can bequeath to an offspring, to be sanctified and blessed and allowed by an electorate who'd opt to have more of the same over decades.
Roderick is known in this city as a political ally of Gov. Danilo Suarez and his son David, representative of the province’s 2nd district.
Roderick’s sudden inclusion in the city political race was prompted by the vice gubernatorial candidacy of his cousin Anacleto Alcala III.
Anacleto, who filed Sunday his COC as the vice governor candidate of Rep. Helen Tan, took the residents in this city by surprise. Or with usual indifference.
Any contender to the Alcala monopoly has to break through that indifference. Tough luck.
