CALAMBA CITY (PIA)- Farmers in Calamba City and the first district of Batangas are slowly recovering from the effects of the November 16 Taal Volcano eruption, thanks to assistance from the Department of Agriculture Region IV-A. (DA Calabarzon).
The government provided up to P43,110,371 in assistance to farmers in Calamba and towns in Batangas' first district whose livelihoods were harmed by the volcanic eruption, according to DA Calabarzon.
Some of the assistance provided by the government to the farmers are botanical concoction, coffee dryer, mutlicultivator, four-wheeled drive tractor, garden tools, grass cutter, greenhouse, hermetic bag that can be used in coffee harvests, knapsack sprayer, mesh net, nursery, power sprayer, pruning saw, shredder machine, UV plastic, water plastic drum, wood vinegar plastic mulch, seedling tray, solar powered irrigation system, and adjustment of pumps and engine sets.
The city government was very grateful for the assistance provided by DA IV-A to the farmers after the volcanic eruption severely affected their livelihoods.
According to Mayor Justin Marc Chipeco, it is a big help for local farmers especially during the pandemic.
The mayor also thanked DA Calabarzon for providing the tractor to their city.
“Kung kailangan nyo, ipahihiram ng pamahalaang lungsod ang mga iyan sa inyo nang libre. Huwag sana kayong magsawang tumulong sa amin,” said Chipeco.
According to the mayor, farmers in their city are in dire need of government assistance due to the impact of the volcanic eruption and the current pandemic.
“Ngayon ay binigyan ng mga machine at magagamit na bagong teknolohiya. Kaya kami ay masaya sa mga programang ipinagkakaloob ng pamahalaan,” said Reynaldo Nova, president of FarmC.
Chipeco also urged the farmers in their city to take care of those provided by DA IV-A so that they can help more.
Also, DA Calabarzon OIC-Regional Executive Director Vilma Dimaculangan urged the beneficiary farmers to take care of the assistance provided by the government.
“Sana ay mahalin natin ang natangggap ngayong araw. Pagyamanin natin ito para mapalawak ang production area at makamit ang mataas na ani at mataas na kita. Patunay po ang mga ito na sa panahon ng pandemya at kalamidad ay ‘di nagpapabaya ang pamahalaan sa mga magsasaka, mangingisda at maghahayupan,” said Dimaculangan.
The distribution of assistance for the agricultural sector also included OIC-Regional Technical Director (RTD) for Operations Engr. Abelardo R. Bragas, and OIC-RTD for Research Engr. Marcos Aves, Sr.
It will be recalled that the government immediately distributed P379, 901,500 worth of intervention after the volcanic eruption last year for the affected farmers in Cavite, Batangas, and Laguna.
DA Calabarzon also provided P407, 647,190 worth of intervention for farmers in Batangas and Cavite last week.
The distributed interventions came from P813, 813,300 funds from the Taal Rehabilitation and Recovery Program. (with report from PB, PIA4A)
