BATANGAS CITY - In commemoration of Rabies Awareness Month, the City Health Office (CHO) has intensified its rabies campaign by distributing reading materials to various barangays.

Every Monday and Thursday, the CHO also continues to provide free vaccinations for dog bites.

Approximately 100 cases are diagnosed here nearly every day, the vast majority of which are from pet dogs and cats.

One of them is 8 -year -old John Andre Toyado of barangay Kumintang Ilaya who was bitten by their neighbor's pet dog.

Dog owner Johnmar Ramos is very grateful to the city government's rabies program.

He said he will not have to spend much on vaccination because it is provided for free by the CHO.

The CHO advises that in case of being injured or bitten by a dog, wash the wound immediately with soap and clean water for 10 minutes or more.

It is also forbidden to seek treatment with a rabies or albularyo and instead go to the nearest Animal Bite Treatment center to be vaccinated against anti-rabies or anti-tetanus if necessary.

Dogs that bite must be tied up or confined to be observed for 14 days.

Also avoid killing a biting dog or cat in any way.

If it dies within 14 days, the head will be cut off by the veterinarian, put in plastic and tied tightly, put on ice and taken to RITM in Alabang or the Bureau of Animal Industry in Quezon City for a brain examination. (with reports from PIO Batangas City)
