LUCBAN, Quezon - Indeed, opportunities for worthwhile pursuits in any sphere of human endeavor are near at hand, likely just at one's fingertips.

Multi-faceted artist Mark Milcky Lagdameo-- better known in show business circles as Khenzuya Yamamoto- found out for himself this truism that had become both as cornerstone and stepping stone to his achievements in various feats in the arts and in showbusiness.



It was a fond wish for himself to go to the land of milk and money-- the United States-- that he went through the paper chase, securing needful documents for his bid to be granted a US visa four years ago. He even prepped to go through a wringer of a mile-long queue for an interview at the American embassy. He was denied that visa.

Dazed, disappointed, and downcast, he went home. And sulked for days.



He rarely went out, just kept to himself until that time when his feet took him to a bookstore, perchance to browse and read some to while away the boredom, probably snap out of his grappling with depression.

His feet took him to a different section of the store, as his hands reached out for materials that go into works of art-- brushes, a passel of empty canvases, and pigments.



Abstraction

Lagdameo/Yamamoto had been blessed with the looks of a poster boy that was an easy passport to stints in events modelling, acting, TV commercials, and whatever it is that rakes in money-- and a measure of fame and fortune.

The Covid-19 contagion puit a dead halt to all of that-- even to his rise as a rock n' roll bandman.

The continuing lockdowns had fully throttled the nation's economy, throwing millions of people out of work, and with little chances to eke out a livelihood.

Thus, he took to the sullen craft of painting-- off the klieg lights, the cameras, and all the hullabaloo attending showbiz. Painting is mostly a discourse with one's thoughts that find full play with nary a noise, just the serene swish of brush bristles and the flow of pigments, forms, and expressions from the pit of one's being.

It was also a way to drain one's head of depression, and a mode that lends full freedom to feelings, to joyous exuberance and fulfillment.

And his modest body of works had thrown open new doors of opportunities, that has carried him to art shows and exhibitions, including the prestigious Salcedo Auctions in which discriminating art lovers vie for buying works of art.

"I am so thankful for these career turns that somehow turn out to be blessings from God. A doctor from Bicol bought one of my abstract paintings which is now on display at his lovely home. It is a boon from God and an honor to an artist to have people cherishing your work," he enthused.
