BATANGAS CITY - In Batangas City, approximately 1,500 barangay officials and members of the Barangay Solid Waste Management Committee attended the recently held Barangay Ecological Solid Waste Management Committee Assembly.
The event focused on environmental issues such as the implementation of Republic Act 9003 or the Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, as well as other city government policies such as environmentally friendly waste management in accordance with the Batangas City Environment Code.
According to the city government, focusing on solid waste management will greatly aid in addressing and mitigating the problem of climate change, which causes disasters.
During the gathering, Romiseth Perez from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) emphasized the important role of the barangay in waste management.
According to Perez, the separation and collection of solid waste should be carried out in the barangay, especially for biodegradable, compostable and reusable wastes.
Mylene Follero of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) shared ways on how to strengthen the solid waste management council that will address the waste problem.
It will be recalled that one of the strategies carried out by the local government in this regard is the information and education campaign of the Katuwang ng Barangay, Responsable Aktibo, Disiplinado (KABRAD) group in the barangays that started in 2018.
Such assembly was overseen by the City Solid Waste Management Board (CSWMB). - BDC, PIA Batangas (report from Batangas City PIO)
