BATANGAS CITY - People are not the only ones likely to get heatstroke caused by the weather.
In this situation, even pets like domestic pigs are at risk.
According to the Veterinary Services Division Chief of the Office of the City Veterinary and Agricultural Services (OCVAS), Dr. Shiela Lualhati, heatstroke is common in pets during extreme heat.
“Prone sa heat stroke ang mga baboy dahil hindi pinapawisan ang mga ito dahil sa kapal ang kanilang taba”, said Dr. Lualhati.
So he advised hog raisers to visit or check on pet pigs often, often bathe and make sure they have drinking water.
He also said that it would help if their fence was equipped with an electric fan and had a high roof to make it airier.
He informed that OCVAS technicians have regular monitoring of backyard hog raisers in the city to safeguard the health of the pigs and quickly address the problems.
He also said that OCVAS will continue to conduct seminars on the proper care of pigs and other animals.
They also provide anti-stress vitamins and electrolytes drinks.
Dr. also reminded. He said that pet owners are encouraged to vaccinate their dogs and cats with the anti-rabies vaccine because rabies becomes active during the summer.
Just contact OCVAS or the barangay for the anti-rabies vaccination schedule.
He also said that the local government continues to repatriate cattle, which is one of the successful programs of OCVAS, where each beneficiary receives a heifer to be cared for. Its offspring can be given to fellow barangays eligible to benefit from the program.
