SAN ANTONIO, Quezon – A woman of courage and perseverance describes Juliana Mendoza-Cox, better known as Julie Cox, who overcame life's obstacles to achieve success and how that struggle sparked a passion for advocacy.
Cox is an entrepreneur, motivational speaker, author, environmentalist, and San Antonio, Quezon native.
Her husband, Mr. Lou Cox, and she currently own a Fil-Am Garden Resort in Brgy. She also lives in Matipunso, San Antonio Quezon, where she continues to advocate for Quezonian youth and fellow countrymen.
After graduating from Niing Elementary School, she received third honorary mention and attended Luzonian High School until her second year of high school.
Even though she did not complete four years of high school, she did not give up on her dreams.
After working hard as a governess for the Velasco family, she was sent to the United States of America, where she earned a GED from Bergen Community College in New Jersey.
There she continued her life, raising her standard of living and helping her family, where Julie was the ninth of twelve (12) siblings.
She worked as a wardrobe consultant at Nordstrom Department Store for twenty (20) years and was recognized for her hard work.
Her name was also inscribed on the Ellis Island Wall of Honor in New York as an immigrant.
Cox has also written two books: one is a memoir called I Ordered My Future Yesterday, and the other is an anthology called Turning Points-Turning Lives One at a Time.
Her book was awarded the Trafford Gold Seal Literary Excellence Award and was featured in the Clarion Foreword Review and the US Review of Books.
Cox also mentioned that she has a son who calls her mom, inay, and mommy, and that he is a wonderful father.
She clarified that she did not regret adopting his son because she believes she also predetermined his son's future.
Cox currently works as a missionary and advocate for trafficked, abused women and children.
One of her goals is to assist her fellow citizens in need, which is why she frequently conducts feeding and medical missions for the poor in various areas.
Aside from being generously kind, she is also an environmentalist and is currently the Chairperson of the San Antonio Municipal Tourism Council.
She actively participates in and supports the Quezon provincial government projects in the field of Tourism, while she still continues to organize programs that will help the community.
When she reflected on her past, she thanked God for everything that had happened to her, from being poor to becoming the successful woman she is now.
She recalls going to church, where a priest once told her that God did not intend to punish her, and that whenever she faces difficulties in life, she should offer everything to Him. Learn to accept and forgive those who have wronged her, and she will see the light.
Cox believes that all of her suffering has shaped her into the person she is today, serving as a beacon and guide for others who are experiencing similar difficulties.
From then on, she chose to survive for her dreams, not only for herself but to get her family out of poverty.
“If there’s a will there’s a way, I don’t have to experience that anymore. I will never be poor again. I did not spend more than I have made.” Julie said.
She strongly believes that she’s more than blessed “I am the luckiest person on earth, I am not what happened to me, I can see my imperfect life perfectly and I am Julie, I’m a fun-loving person that goes everywhere to go be a blessing.” Julie added.
From eating expired food from the garbage to where she is now, Cox believes that helping others is her wealth.
Julie's inspiring story was featured on radio and television, as well as in local and international newspapers and magazines.
Featured in a one-on-one interview with the Philippine King of Talk Mr. Boy Abunda in his television program ‘The Bottomline with Boy Abunda’ and also one of the Quezon Medalya ng Karangalan 2014 awardees in the Public Service category.
