CALAMBA CITY, Laguna — Various government agencies and local government units across Calabarzon joined the nation in the commemoration of the country’s 124th Independence Day.
Themed “Kalayaan 2022: Pagsuong sa Hamon ng Panibagong Bukas,” agencies and LGUs held simultaneous flag-raising and wreath-laying rites on Sunday, June 12.
In Cavite, House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez graced the Independence Day celebration at the Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, the site of the declaration of the Philippines’ freedom from the colonizers by General Emilio Aguinaldo in 1898.
In his message, Romualdez asked Filipinos to protect the gains of Independence which paved the way for citizens to spend time with families and loved ones peacefully.
He also paid tribute to countrymen and women who shed blood to secure the freedom that Filipinos enjoy today and remain at peace with neighbors.
As the country’s new leaders are set to assume their posts, he asked everyone to reach out to fellow Filipinos, friends or foe and set aside politics which have torn families and friends apart.
“We need your support for our leaders. We need all hands on deck. The threat of Covid19 is not yet over. Economy still bouncing back from ravages of pandemic. Let’s face these challenges with heads up high,” he added.
Said event was also graced by Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla, incoming Justice Sec. Crispin Remulla, and Kawit Mayor Angelo Emilio Aguinaldo who is a great grandchild of the country’s first President.
The Laguna and Batangas provincial governments led by Gov. Ramil Hernandez and Gov. Hermilando Mandanas also took part in this year’s celebration by holding the same ceremonies at their capitol grounds.
Meanwhile, other government officials lead the flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies simultaneously conducted in different LGUs and historical landmarks in the region.
Independence Day is a regular holiday throughout the country by Proclamation 1236.
From 1946 to 1961, the Philippines celebrated Independence Day every July 4. It was moved to June 12 by Proclamation No. 28, series of 1962. In 1964, Congress passed Republic Act 4166 formally designating June 12 of every year as the date on which the country celebrates Philippine independence.
