BATANGAS CITY - Construction is underway on the new Balagtas Flyover Project in Batangas City, which began in November 2020.

Engr. Ken Hernandez, the project's resident engineer, says the design of this flyover is unique because it has two alignments, one to a diversion road and the other to Batangas City proper.

He said that its design is difficult because it resembles the letter "Y," and that its construction is also difficult.

It is estimated that the project is at 21% completion despite some issues faced by the project such as acquisition of right of way and limited working hours where only at night and during times when there are few passing vehicles, to avoid severe congestion in traffic flow.

The Balagtas Flyover Project is an initiative of Batangas 5th District Representative, Marvey Mariño and aims to alleviate the heavy traffic experienced at the Balagtas exit especially during rush hour or a time when large volumes of vehicles pass through it.

The Diversion Road alignment is 700 meters long while the alignment to Batangas City proper is 740 meters long. It has two lanes that merge into one lane when it comes to the far approach. Each approach measures 6.7 meters and 3.5 at the exit.

It also has a bike lane measuring 1.1 meters.

The bridge is 6.7 meters wide and has a peak height of nine meters.

Hernandez stressed that there is no timetable yet when the flyover will end and its funding is still on-going until next year.

Board piles and concreting will also start to be laid in some parts of the bridge next week and it is expected to continue especially if the good weather also continues which is one of the hindrances to its construction.

Meanwhile, a temporary detour road near Buenafe Subdivision was opened to be an alternative road for motorists while the project is being completed. (with reports from PIO Batangas City)
