SANTA ROSA CITY — The Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) has underscored the importance of efficient energy use for the farthest parts of the country that experience power shortage.

During the launch of the ‘Enerhiyang Atin’ kiosk of the Department of Energy (DOE) in this city on May 25, PCOO Undersecretary Kristian Ablan urged the public to use electricity wisely so that power supply can reach even the most remote parts of the country.

‘Enerhiyang Atin’ is an initiative of the PCOO and the DOE that promotes the use of new and energy-efficient alternatives. This information campaign aims to create a source of information, recommendations, policies and programs being implemented by the DOE to promote energy efficiency,” Ablan said.

“The way things happen [is that] the electricity goes where it’s needed. Mayroon tayong grid na tinatawag, at kapag nagproduce ng kuryente ang isang planta pumupunta ito sa nangangailangan,” the PCOO Undersecretary added.

With such limited supply, Ablan said the public has the duty to conserve such essential resources.

Energy efficiency and conservation is a lifestyle choice, DOE Energy Efficiency & Conservation Division Chief Artemio Habitan told the public.

“Energy efficiency [can be seen] in technology. In the government, it means to ensure an ample supply of energy. Para sa bansa natin, it means the protection of our environment and climate change mitigation,” Habitan said.

In fact, the DOE is leading the Energy Efficiency Program (EC Way of Life) to assist government offices and private companies identify, install, operate, and monitor their energy conservation and efficiency programs.

As the host of the Enerhiyang Atin kiosk in Laguna, Santa Rosa City is also adopting policies to conserve energy.

“It is necessary for us to know how to utilize our energy resources by making energy efficiency a part of our daily activity. Slowly, we can inform, educate and raise the public’s awareness on energy efficiency and conservation to have a sustainable energy system in the future,” Mayor Arlene Arcillas said.

The so-called ‘Detroit of the Philippines’, Santa Rosa is one of the highly industrialized communities in the country and hosts five (5) industrial estates, all of which utilize a notable amount of electricity on a daily basis.

As a solution, Santa Rosa has started constructing ‘green’ buildings which are designed to reduce carbon footprints by efficiently using energy, water and other resources. The city has also started converting private and government establishments to efficiently use energy and other resources. — Patricia Bermudez, PIA 4A
