BATANGAS CITY - According to data shared by the Provincial Inter-Agency Task Force on Arsenic-Taal Volcano Protected Landscape (TVPL) at the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council meeting at the Provincial Auditorium, Capitol Compound, Batangas City, nine areas in Batangas Province recently tested positive for arsenic in their water.
According to Dr. Rhodora Reyes, chief of the Batangas Medical Center Toxicology Center and head of the Provincial IATF on Arsenic-TVPL, arsenic is a carcinogenic chemical that causes cancer and adverse effects on human skin and unborn babies. It can enter the body through the mouth or by drinking contaminated water.
The presence of arsenic in the water wells was previously noticed after the eruption of the Taal Volcano on January 12, 2020. Among the areas with high levels of arsenic are found in the towns of Laurel, Balete, San Nicolas, High Wood, Alitagtag, and Sta. Teresita, Lemery, Taal and Tanauan city.
Arsenic levels in towns exceed 10 parts per billion (PBB).
Arsenic levels are being monitored in the surrounding towns.
In response, the Batangas PDRRMO has allocated ₱ 3.5 Million from their trust fund to assist in the ongoing water tests.
