CAVINTI, Laguna - A senior member of the terrorist group New People's Army was arrested by authorities in an operation conducted by the police and army in Barangay Burgos, Pakil Laguna, on Saturday, June 11.
Vertudes D. Macapanpan Gonzales, an NPA-Southern Tagalog Regional Party Committee member who used the aliases "Lola Kits, Tyan, Tian, Lola, Marsha, Daisy, and Dits," was described as "top-ranking."
Vertudes was arrested under an arrest warrant with Criminal Case No. 2943-I for the rebellion case issued by Presiding Judge Arnelo Mesa of Regional Trial Court Branch 65 in Infanta, Quezon, on May 23, 2008, with a subsequent version on March 4, 2013.
According to his former colleagues who have already surrendered to the government, Vertudes is at the forefront of conducting 'party courses' and other mass orientations to educate the youth, students, and other sectors, such as indigenous people who have joined the NPA.
Vertudes is also responsible for using and encouraging indigenous people in General Nakar in rallies held by leftist groups in Manila since 2012.
Brigadier General Cerilo Balaoro Jr., Commander of the 202nd Infantry Brigade, praised the police and army for their successful operation.
"The arrest of a high-ranking CPP-NPA personality in Southern Tagalog is a clear manifestation that the government's sustained and intensified effort to end local communist armed conflict is gaining ground. The series of neutralization of CTG leaders will result in a snowball of surrenders among their members, which is one of the key components in ending this decades-long insurgency," said Balaoro.
Balaoro also urged the remaining members of the communist groups to surrender their weapons and return to the government. (with report from 202nd Infantry Unifier Brigade)
