ATIMONAN, Quezon - After signing a memorandum of agreement (MOA) for constructing a resettlement site and new evacuation center, the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) donated more than P75 million in assistance from the Building Adequate Livable Affordable and Inclusive Filipino Community or BALAI Filipino Community Program.

Attending the MOA signing and groundbreaking ceremony was DHSUD Secretary Eduardo Del Rosario, DHSUD 4-A Regional Director Atty. Jann Roby Otero, Atimonan Mayor Rustico Mendoza, and other DHSUD and local government officials.

The resettlement site is a planned housing project for government employees and teachers and permanent housing for informal settler families and those in danger zones.

It is also planned to build in Brgy. Sokol is an evacuation center with a total size of 1,445 sq.m that can accommodate up to 106 families.

The building has a kitchen, mess hall, reception area, shower stall, toilet, laundry area, clinic, prayer room, breastfeeding room, play area, storage, and administrative office.

Although his term was coming to an end, Sec. Del Rosario said DHSUD will continue to assist the town of Atimonan in implementing the LGU's project plans.

"Kahit ako po ay about 16 days na lang dito sa aking pagtatrabaho sa Department of Human Settlements [and Urban Development], yan ang bilin ko kay Atty. Otero na tulungan ang municipality of Atimonan sa kanilang future projects."

The secretary also said that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte personally approved the design of the evacuation center, which was a big help during the disaster.

Mayor Mendoza is very grateful to Sec. Del Rosario because his project request for the town was quickly approved.

"Magkakaroon po ng katuparan ang akin pong pangarap na sana bago po ako matapos sa aking paglilingkod bilang punong bayan, maumpisahan po natin ang ating housing program di lamang po sa ating mga kawani, kundi para po sa ating reclamation ng mga informal settlers.", promise of Mendoza.

Atimonan is the first LGU in the province to receive BALAI assistance from DHSUD. Some regional municipalities, such as Taal and Balete, Batangas, have already received service from the department. (with a report from DHSUD and Atimonan PRIO)
