CALATAGAN, Batangas — The local government's top priority is to protect the town's mangrove forests.

Mayor Peter Oliver Palacio assured this after formally signing the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the local government and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) regarding their town's Forest Land Use Plan (FLUP) recently.

It was attended by DENR CALABARZON Director Nilo B. Tamoria, OIC-PENRO Batangas Noel Recillo, OIC-CENRO Calaca Isagani Amatorio, MENRO Ma. Emelyn Custodio, and MPDO Amalia Caubelejo.

According to Palacio, being a part of the program is an honor for their country. With the assistance of the said agreement, the mangrove forest in their town has grown from 76 to 500 hectares.

The mayor added that the preservation of mangrove forests is one of the programs prioritized by the local government.

Tamoria, on the other hand, promised to assist the local government in developing FLUP as part of their Comprehensive Land Use Plan. He stated that the signed agreement demonstrates the unity between the agency and the Calatagan LGU.

“Ang DENR ay nandito upang magbigay ng technical assistance sa pagpaplano sa kung ano ba ang maaring gawin para sa mga bahagi ng kalupaan na napapailalim sa klasipikasyon ng forestland,” Tamoria said.
