LOBO, Batangas —The artificial coral reefs placed in the ocean by four barangays in the town of Lobo are now home to a variety of fish and marine life.
According to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region (BFAR) 4-A, they placed about 6,000 blocks of artificial coral in the said town.
In 2014, they began placing artificial coral in Barangay Olo-olo, Soloc, and Malabrigo, and in 2015, they placed artificial coral in Barangay Balibago and Barangay Biga.
Artificial coral was last placed in the ocean covered by Barangay Lagadlarin in 2016.
This year, the agency's target is to place an additional 2,000 blocks of artificial coral reef.
The purpose of the said project is to make the marine life in the ocean flourish by placing possible habitats and roosting places for sea turtles.
The coastal areas of Lobo are covered by the Verde Island Passage which is the center of marine biodiversity in the world.
