LUCENA CITY - Mayor Mark Alcala encourages the planting and trading Sampaguita flowers in Lucena City as part of the Boom Sampaguita Project.
The Organizing and Election of Officers of Mayaowin Sampaguita Growers and Traders Association led by OIC Arween Flores was held recently under the leadership of the City Agricultuist Office.
Here, Rene Ramos, Sr was elected as the president of the formed association and shared his experience in growing tulips that he thinks will be a guide for those who are new to planting such flowers.
Ramos also requests the support of all members to restore the tulip’s vitality prior to the pandemic.
According to the City Agriculturist Office, Mayao Parada is known for growing and selling Sampaguita in San Pedro Laguna and is considered the Sampaguita Capital.
However, due to the impact of the pandemic, the export and sale of it have ceased. Their flowers are now only sold to local growers or garland makers, limiting their market and income, and many have temporarily ceased operations.
The local government will now focus on supporting those needed to recover and re-energize the Sampaguita through the City Agriculturist mandated by Alcala.
The primary goal of the Boom Sampaguita Program is to encourage new growers, reproduce seedlings and trees, and provide equipment and agri-inputs in order to have a sufficient supply of flowers to export while maintaining a local production of National flowers in Lucena.
