BATANGAS CITY - The Farmers Field School (FFS) recently graduated twenty farmers from barangay Tulo and the Talumpok Silangan Multipurpose Cooperative (MPC).
The session was conducted once a week for 16 weeks in Mamay Teban's farmland in barangay Tulo.
The Office of the City Veterinarian and Agricultural Services (OCVAS) taught them how to plant fast-fruiting vegetables like ampalaya, patola, squash, and others.
They learned how to make organic fertilizers and insecticides, as well as Integrated Pest Management (IPM), Fermented Fruit Juice (FFJ), Fermented Plant Juice (FPJ), and Oriental Herbal Medicine (OHM).
According to City Veterinarian Dr. Loyola Bagui, the goal is to teach farmers methods that will not harm nature and people's health.
“Gusto nating maisulong ng maayos ang agrikultura, lalo pa nga’t ang mga magsasaka ang pinakamahalagang sektor ng komunidad”, said Dr. Bagui.
The graduates received assorted seeds, seedling trays, cultivators, garden hoe, and other planting equipment.
They will also be given a greenhouse with hydroponics and a greenhouse with an irrigation system.
In conjunction with the graduation ceremony is the harvest festival of their crops.
The city government provided shredders, grass cutters, and others for the Batangas City Banana Growers Association and Cacao Planters Association.
Riza Apostol, Mamay Teban's daughter, is very grateful that because of this OCVAS project, the once barren and forested land inherited by their father has become productive.
He said that after being an OFW for a long time, he wants to stay in the city to cultivate and enrich their land.
