BATANGAS CITY - The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) conducted a series of Information Caravans in various sectors in the province of Batangas held at the Provincial Auditorium in this city from November 22 to 25.
The caravan launched with a media briefing, followed by a public information campaign among academe members where the polymer banknote and scam issues were discussed, attended by local media and Information Officers from local governments.
The next series was on November 24 with representatives of the agriculture sector, transport groups, market vendors, and tourism. They discussed the polymer banknote and Financial Education, and in the MSMEs sector, consumer groups and representatives of DTI Batangas discussed Digital Payments and Paleng QR Ph.
On November 25, the same caravan was where the BPLOs, Municipal Treasurers, Brgy. Captain/Treasurers, staff of the Provincial Government of Batangas, and Department of Interior and Local Government.
According to Jose Ruperto Almeda Jr., BSP Senior Research Specialist, only the BSP has the sole power to print and distribute coins and banknotes that will serve as "legal tender" as stated in RA 7653 or The New Central Bank Act as amended by RA 11211.
He claims that the Polymer Piso, or new 1000 pesos issued by the BSP, is more difficult for counterfeiters to imitate, cleaner, and more durable than the previous banknote.
Metallic features, tactile dots, shadow thread, enhanced value panel, serial numbers, and others that belong to the first level security features are also shared. The second level is visible with ultraviolet and magnifying lenses.
Meanwhile, Paulette Gay Menguilla, BSP Acting Bank Officer II, discussed matters related to fraud and scams to avoid becoming its victim.
There were types of fraud, such as card replacement, card cloning, and ATM skimming, all of which is identity theft, which, according to him, is the primary cause of fraudulent transactions.
It also discussed different types of identity theft such as phishing, vishing, SMishing, Shoulder Surfing, dumpster diving, and Spoofing as well as types of scams including text scams, unexpected money scams, romance scams, threat extortion scams, donation charity scams, travel trouble scam, job offer scam and unexpected prize scam.
In the end, Menguilla reminded us that everyone should be "vigilant" to avoid being a victim of bad intentions and should only conduct transactions with legitimate financial institutions. (MDC/PIA-Batangas)
