VICTORIA, Laguna - Students from public and private schools recently celebrated National Reading Month and Book Week in this town.
A Book Character Parade in which students dressed up as characters from children's books and stories was held. There were also reading and storytelling activities for the students.
In a statement, Cecilia Evio of Missionari Della Fede Inc. said that it is vital to increase awareness of reading books to make them understand the good benefits and pleasure it can bring.
Every November, the Philippines observes National Reading Month. In 2011, former education secretary and Lasallian brother Armin Luistro declared the 11th month of the year as an unofficial celebration of reading and learning in the country.
Meanwhile, the Department of Education declared November 25 as "Araw ng Pagbasa (Reading Day)."
Coinciding with the two events are National Book Development Month—under Proclamation 1436 series of 2007—and National Book Week—under Proclamation 109 series of 1936—during the fourth week of November.
These initiatives complemented then-President Benigno Aquino's Every Child A Reader program.
