ATIMONAN, Quezon – Early warning signs of an impending tsunami can be found in the Earth's magnetic field, according to research. In light of this, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) regional office in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon) and Batangas State University (BSU) unveiled the town's additional Tsunami Early Warning and Alert System this past weekend in Atimonan.
According to the local government of Atimonan, the systemthat installed is a Solar-powered Isotropic Generator of Acoustic Wave (SIGAW), a Tsunami Early-Warning System, which will warn residents via alarms and text broadcasts.
According to the local government of Atimonan, the system is being installed to install a Solar-powered Isotropic Generator of Acoustic Wave (SIGAW), a Tsunami Early-Warning System, which will warn residents through alarms and text broadcasts.
BSU associate professor Alberto Amante and DOST-Calabarzon regional director Emelita Bagsit spearheaded the initiative.
Currently, seven SIGAWs provided by DOST-Calabarzon and the BSU have been installed in the province to detect these dangerous waves, and their data is sent to scientists at the nearest Tsunami Warning Center for verification, forecasting, and alerting.
It's a system that's been in place since the 1950s. A tsunami's speed can be measured up to 500 miles (800 kilometers) per hour.
