LUCENA CITY - Peace and order isn't much of a headache for Lucena City- the crime index is at a low 28.92% with the local populace enjoying a high safety index of 71.08% compared to a high 65.4% crime index in Manila with a low 34.6% safety index.
At the national level, Lucena still fares favorably as the crime index of 42.71% and safety index of 57.29% for the country. Which makes you feel that life in the Philippines is fraught with perils.
A stitch in time saves nine, thus, Lucena city officials have moved to beef up the numbers of local law enforcers in a bid to provide better security for the populace.
City councilor Americo Lacerna has filed a resolution requesting the PNP to field 50 more lawmen for Lucena.
"I found out that currently, the city has a 900 people to one policeman ratio when the ideal is one police personnel for every 500 citizens," Lacerna said.
The city has a population of 278,000, while the police force only has 153 staff.
At a recent sangguniang panglungsod meeting, councilor Danny Nobleza, as city director of the Department of the Interior and Local Government, called the national headquarters of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to inquire if an additional 50 police personnel is possible for the Lucena City Police Station (LCPS), and received positive feedback.
A formal request would be forwarded to the PNP national headquarters as final step in the move to bolster the number of Lucena lawmen.
