GENERAL LUNA, Quezon - As part of the Coconut Hybridization Program (CHP), the Philippine Coconut Authority Quezon II (PCA Quezon II) will build a coconut nursery in this town.
In an exclusive interview with the Sentinel Times, PCA Quezon II Provincial Manager Lanie Lapitan stated that the organization intends to distribute hybrid seedlings to coconut farmers for high production, not just in General Luna but also in neighboring municipalities.
Lapitan explained that CHP is also part of the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP) under the law RA 11524, also known as the Coconut Farmers and Industry Trust Fund Act, which provides for its management and utilization, reconstituting for the Philippine Coconut Authority Board, and other purposes.
"A coconut nursery is a location where coconut seeds are grown before they it's planted in the field; the coconut seedlings will remain in the nursery for 5-6 months before being transferred to the plantations," she added.
"It is not recommended to plant coconut seed nuts directly in the field. Care must be taken when selecting seedlings to start a plantation because high-quality planting materials provide a good head start to sustain the productive and economic lifespan of coconut palms of 60 years or more." she said.
Meanwhile, General Luna Mayor Matt Erwin Florido stated that this is part of his goal to revive the town's coconut industry.
According to PCA Quezon II, they will purchase coconuts from local farmers for use in the nursery project. Coconuts should be nurtured and grown into strong young seedlings before being given to farmers to plant in the fields.
