TANAUAN CITY, Batangas— As part of Tanauan's 22nd year as a city, the Bonsai Show Competition was held, in which bonsai enthusiasts from Tanauan and other parts of Batangas competed.
Tanauan City Mayor Nelson Collantes said in his message that the purpose of the contest is to help Tanaueños with a passion for bonsai further expand their knowledge and talent, as well as to promote their interest in becoming an alternative occupation or permanent resident.
"I am only asking the organizers here to help lower the price of bonsai because the value of these types of plants is not unknown to us. It would also be good if it could be taught as an alternative occupation, especially if it could be made permanent for our fellow Tanaueños and you can expect the city government to support this initiative," said Collantes.
The mayor added that if Tanauan is known for these beautiful bonsai, it can also promote the city's tourism, especially to foreigners who also love bonsai.
According to Jojo Natividad, President of the Tanauan Bonsai Society, apart from their bonsai displays that will last for a week.
There are also trainings and seminars that will be given to beginners and advanced bonsai enthusiasts who wish to attend the exhibit.
He said their group promotes the introduction of bonsai production not only to the talent of the Tanaueños but also to become an alternative occupation, in addition to the desire to introduce to other bonsai enthusiasts the trees such as callos and balete that are abundant in Tanauan but not in other places.
