CALAMBA CITY, Laguna - At the International Silat Championships, two female competitors from Laguna brought home bronze medals, putting the province on the medals table for the competition.
Angeline Viria and Angel Gwen Derla continue to rock the world stage with their skills in the art of Pencak Silat, whether they are clapping for others or getting applause for themselves.
They are delegates of the National Philippine Team, participants in the World Pencak Silat Championship, bronze medalists of the 6th Asian Senior Silat Championship, and the 2023 Sarawak Premier International Silat Championship bronze medalists held recently in Sarawak, Malaysia.
Viriña placed 3rd in the Tanding Class A (45–50 kg), while Derla won another bronze in the Bebas Solo Creative Category.
The Philippine delegation of 33 athletes won 10 medals, including two golds, two silvers, and six bronzes.
The two athletes had previously been from the Laguna Pencak Silat Team for the Philippine Youth Games, or "Batang Pinoy." Viria was an assistant coach, and Derla was a former player for Laguna Greywolves Pencak Silat Head Coach Saimon Brondo.
Ziara Mari Oquendo, another athlete from the province, joined Viria and Derla for the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia from May 5–17, 2023.
Brondo and Mario Tobias, who were in charge of the Provincial Sports and Games Development Office (PSGDO), hope that the three athletes will inspire more Laguna Pencak Silat athletes to do well in international competitions.
Through the unwavering support of Gov. Ramil Hernandez, PSGDO regularly conducts sports clinics and participates in grassroots programs such as the "Batang Pinoy" to develop competitive athletes from the province.
