LUCENA CITY, Quezon - A Brahminy Kite or hawk, a type of bird that would have been sold by a 25-year-old man in open farmland in Brgy. Dila, of Bay, Laguna, was recently rescued by Quezon Maritime Police Station personnel.
PCPT. Benito Siddayao Jr., the chief of Quezon Maritime PNP said that a suspect tried to sell the bird online without the right permits and papers, but that he was caught in a bust operation that saved the bird. The operation also led to the suspect's arrest.
He said an online transaction took place with the suspect to sell a Brahminy Kite for P3,000, and the buy-bust took place at the agreed-upon locations.
"Through online negotiation, introduce our operatives here who will buy as a result of the conversation we entrapped through a buy-bust operation," Siddayao explained.
"Because our DENR requires a permit, they know that our endangered species cannot be sold and must be preserved for future generations," Siddayao explained.
Because he didn't have a permit, the Purok 6, Hanggan II resident was arrested for trading in illegal wildlife.
The rescued hawk was transported to the DENR Office by the Quezon Maritime PNP Group.
"We are handing over our SOP to the DENR for its normal habitat," Siddayao explained. The suspect is charged with violating Section 27, paragraph e. (Trading of Wildlife).
Meanwhile, the Quezon Maritime PNP has rescued wildlife that had been illegally sold online on several occasions.
The public is also reminded that under Republic Act 9174, or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act, the capture, slaughter, and sale of endangered species is prohibited.
