LUCENA CITY - Spreading false information and possibly causing panic is a crime according to disaster risk management, so they build solutions in partnership with journalists, broadcasters, and other media professionals to prevent this from happening.

Together with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Quezon and Radyo Pilipinas Lucena and more than 25 other media organizations, journalists from various radio stations, newspapers, and others, as well as members of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), are working to improve information transmission both before and during natural disasters.

Dr. Melchor Avenilla, the head of the PDRRMO department in Quezon who led the launch of the "STANd UPPPP Media Network" (Una sa Pag-Iwas, Paghahanda, Pagtugon, at Pagbangon ang Quezon), believes that the media can help a lot by reminding people more quickly and giving them updates when a calamity happens.

Avenilla also said the new media network sought by "unified messaging" will make it simple for the PDRRMO and the media to disseminate data in a timely manner, particularly regarding how to be prepared for any type of disaster.

"I think the media will be a big help in letting people know about disasters in Quezon more quickly and keeping them up to date," Avenilla said.

He said this is also part of Quezon Governor Helen Tan's desire to have every sector in the province partner in disaster prevention and response.

Meanwhile, the idea for the STANd UPPPP media network came from seeing the Quezon PDRRMO office and the preparations made by the department office whenever a disaster occurs in the province, according to Joselito Giron, PIA Quezon Provincial Information Center Manager.

On the other hand, Maritess Balquiedra, Station Manager of DWLC-Radyo Pilipinas Lucena, talked about how important it is to be aware of disasters and be ready for them. She saw this during a recent study trip to Australia.

The STANd UPPPP Media Network held a leadership election, with Gemi Formaran of the Journal Group of Publications elected president, Tom Alvarez of Radyo Pilipinas Lucena as vice president, and Margz Dianito Licardo of DZAT 1512 Life Radio as secretary.
