BATANGAS CITY - A Declaration of Intent to Support the Plastic Smart Cities Project was signed recently by the government of Batangas City, through Mayor Beverley Dimacuha, and the World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature, through its Executive Director Katherine Custodio.

The WWF has launched Plastic Smart Cities with the goal of motivating and encouraging cities and coastal areas to take bold action against plastics and achieve zero plastics in nature by 2030.

The initiative seeks to address the plastic pollution crisis by promoting sustainable waste management practices, fostering innovation in packaging and materials, and increasing public and business awareness.

Additionally, it aims to work with businesses, governments, and civil society organizations to develop a circular economy for plastics. Designing products that can be recycled or reused will be necessary, as will creating new technologies to turn plastic waste into useful resources.

Plastic Smart Cities hopes to create a cleaner and healthier planet for future generations by working together toward a common goal.

The city commits to building on the existing city waste data and its endpoints by conducting baseline assessments on social and behavioral change (SBC) and gender; integrate SBC and gender in the city’s 10-year Solid Waste Management (SWM) Plan; launch a pilot project to trial solutions to plastic pollution within a designated area; work on reporting progress toward the city’s 10-year SWM plan; and appoint an in-house staff member as the city’s lead person for the
Plastic Smart Cities initiative.

These measures ensure the city's dedication to addressing environmental concerns and promoting sustainable practices. The city is taking important steps toward creating a cleaner and more equitable community by incorporating a gender perspective into the SWM plan and focusing on plastic pollution.

Batangas City commits to exercising strong leadership to mobilize the relevant city departments, energize citizens and local stakeholders, build the necessary capacity and skills, prioritize resources, promote sustainable products and services, and enforce the necessary policy regulations.

This initiative is in partnership with USAID-Clean City Blue Ocean (CCBO).
