TIAONG, Quezon - The municipal government in Tiaong, Quezon, has started providing free chest x-rays to its residents as part of a new initiative in support of the Provincial Health Office's fight against tuberculosis.
The Municipal Health Office's program focuses on people who are members of vulnerable groups, such as senior citizens, the poor, people with diabetes, health professionals, and smokers.
The initiative aims to detect early signs of tuberculosis and other lung diseases. The free chest x-rays will help in the prevention and control of these illnesses, especially among those who cannot afford regular medical check-ups.
It was done in collaboration with the Tiaong Municipal Health Office, Quezon Provincial Health Office, and Culion Foundation Incorporated.
Some of the other lung diseases that can be detected through chest x-rays include tuberculosis, pneumonia, and lung cancer. Early detection and treatment of these illnesses can greatly improve the chances of recovery and reduce the risk of complications.
According to the local government, the program has helped 450 residents aged 15 years and older from 31 barangays.
The chest x-ray program is a crucial initiative that can potentially save many lives in the community. It is commendable that the local government has taken steps to provide this service to their constituents, especially those who may not have easy access to healthcare facilities.
TB is an airborne infection caused by bacteria (mycobacterium tuberculosis) that usually affects the lungs.
Early detection and treatment of TB are crucial in preventing its spread, and providing free TB screening can greatly contribute to achieving this goal. It is important for individuals to take advantage of this service to protect not only themselves but also their families and the community as a whole.
According to data from the Department of Health, the agency recorded approximately 470,000 cases of tuberculosis in the country in 2022.
