BATANGAS CITY - In recognition of the barangay's outstanding efforts in promoting responsible pet ownership and implementing effective rabies vaccination programs, Barangay Haligue Silangan was named the Best Barangay in the Rabies Control Program.
The said barangay was awarded a P10,000 prize and a certificate recently at the Plaza Mabini Amphitheater.
The City Health Office and the City Veterinary Office presented the award to recognize the barangay's significant contribution to halting the spread of rabies in their neighborhood.
The barangay officials and residents expressed their gratitude and commitment to continue their efforts in maintaining a rabies-free environment.
This achievement serves as an inspiration for other barangays to follow suit and work towards a rabies-free community.
The second place was won by barangay Maapaz, who earned P7,000 plus a certificate, while the third place was won by Polacion 6, who took home P5,000 plus a certificate.
Such a search was started in October last year, while monitoring and evaluation were conducted in January.
Its purpose is to promote responsible pet ownership by vaccinating and tying pet dogs to prevent them from wandering.
The basis for the selection of the winners was the passing of a barangay ordinance in accordance with the Anti-Rabies Act of 2007, the number of dogs registered, the number of vaccinated dogs, and the absence of stray dogs.
The representative of barangay Haligue Silangan, retired Major Danilo Balmes, shared some important information about the challenges they faced in the implementation of the ordinance.
The awarding ceremony was performed by Councilor Ched Atienza and Chief of the Office of the City Veterinary, Dr. Loyola Bagui.
In his message, Councilor Ched emphasized the significance of holding such a competition to protect the public from rabies, a fatal disease spread by an animal's bite or saliva.
The barangay of Alangilan was also awarded for being the most active barangay in dog catching and having the most active dog catchers.
Certificates of participation were also given to the 28 barangays that participated in the contest.
The dog trainer Gio Marcelo, who gave tips on dog training, was also featured in this event.
He also gave advice to pet owners on the proper care of dogs, specifically providing proper housing, proper food, and proper hygiene.
Dr. Bagui extended his heartfelt gratitude to all the barangays that participated in the aforementioned search.
