BATANGAS CITY - On May 26, 20 students from the EBD Child Development Center (CDC) demonstrated their abilities, talent, and creativity in the Batangas City Library and Information Center's Book Character and Storytelling Contest.
The children were able to showcase their imagination and confidence as they narrated their chosen stories in front of a panel of judges. The contest aimed to promote literacy and a love of reading among young children in the community.
The said competition is part of the City Library's “Magbasa, Maglaro, at Magkuwentuhan sa Lungsod Aklatan." The contest aims to encourage children to read more books.
The winner as Best Storyteller was Aquisha Cheskah Ylagan, who shared a story about Rapunzel; second was Nikaella Cua, who told a story about Snow White and was also chosen as Best in Costume; and the third prize winner was King Mark Zean Solis, whose story was about Toy Story.
They received cash prizes and medals. The storytelling competition was held in celebration of National Book Month. The event aimed to promote a love for reading and literature among the youth.
Featured as a guest storyteller is Local Youth Development Officer (LYDO) Nelbert Magbanua, who also represented Mayor Beverley Dimacuha.
"With our reading, we can fly in the air, swim under the sea, and reach the places we want to go", said Magbanua.
City Librarian Mila Silang emphasized that reading the book has many benefits.
It expands vocabulary and develops speaking skills, critical thinking, and imagination. She also added that reading can reduce stress and improve overall mental health.
She advises parents to guide and encourage their children to read.
"Reading is not just a hobby, it is a lifelong skill that can benefit individuals in various aspects of their lives," Silang said.
