CALAMBA, Laguna - An elevated, double-track and electrified train system has begun construction in the Alabang-Calamba area, which is expected to improve transportation efficiency and provide commuters with a more sustainable mode of transportation.
According to officials, the electrified train system known as the Alabang-Calamba Segment of the North-South Commuter Railways (NSCR) will help reduce carbon emissions and contribute to a greener environment.
In a groundbreaking jointly conducted by the Philippine National Railways (PNR) and Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Jaime Bautista of DOTr said the goal is to continue promoting large projects such as the NSCR, which will connect the North and South of Metro Manila.
A flagship project under the ‘Build Better More’ Program, the 147.26-km NSCR system aims to seamlessly connect Clark, Pampanga and Calamba, Laguna by linking Metro Manila to its neighboring provinces from 4-4.5 hours travel time, to just less than two (2) hours.
Bautista stated that this is a significant step toward improving Metro Manila transportation and reducing traffic congestion. The NSCR will provide commuters with a faster and more efficient mode of transportation, connecting key areas in Metro Manila's north and south.
It will also contribute to regional economic growth and development by improving accessibility and connectivity.
The project also aims to strengthen the economy by creating numerous opportunities and jobs for all.
The Project is co-financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). (with reports from DOTr)
