LUCENA CITY - In celebration of the 45th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week, a symposium was held here to raise awareness and promote about the rights and privileges of persons with disabilities (PWD).
The City of Lucena, in collaboration with the Social Welfare and Development Office (SWDO) and the Disability Affairs Office (PDAO), hosted a symposium on Persons with Disabilities Accessibility and Rights: Towards a Sustainable Future with No One Left Behind on Friday, July 21, at the Event Center SM City Lucena.
According to the focal person, PDAO Ruth Mangubat the symposium aimed to raise awareness about the rights and privileges of PWDs as well as provide them with information on available support services and programs in the city.
She highlighted the importance of inclusivity and equal opportunities for people with disabilities in all aspects of society , including education, employment, and social participation.
Mangubat emphasized that by ensuring accessibility and promoting the rights of PWDs, we can work towards a more sustainable future where no one is left behind.
The symposium also served as a platform for dialogue and collaboration between different stakeholders to further enhance the support system for PWDs in the city.
She emphasized the need to remove barriers and promote accessibility to ensure that PWDs can fully participate and contribute to their communities.
The event also featured various activities such as workshops, seminars, and exhibits to showcase the talents and abilities of PWDs, promoting a more inclusive and accepting society for all.
According to Councilor Nicanor Pedro Jr., chairman of the Committee on Social Welfare of the City Council of Lucena, who personally attended the symposium , the symposium was a crucial step in ensuring that the rights of PWDs are upheld and protected in Lucena City.
He emphasized the importance of promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities for all individuals, regardless of their abilities.
Pedro highlighted the need for continuous collaboration between government agencies and stakeholders to address the challenges faced by PWDs and create a more inclusive society.
In a speech, Assistant City Legal Officer Atty. Francisco Lagman, who served as a resource speaker during the event, stressed the significance of implementing policies and programs that cater to the specific needs of PWDs.
He also underscored the importance of raising awareness and educating the public about disability rights to foster a more inclusive and understanding community.
Atty. Lagman highlighted the need for collaboration among government agencies and stakeholders to ensure that infrastructure and public spaces are accessible for PWDs.
He emphasized that inclusive policies and programs should not only focus on physical accessibility, but also on promoting equal opportunities and eliminating discrimination against PWDs in various aspects of society.
