BATANGAS CITY - To provide more knowledge to corn farmers on the correct and proper care of their crops and corn pest management, a training was recently conducted by the Batangas Provincial Agri Office.
The said meeting and training on corn production, led by Provincial Agriculturist, Dr. Rodrigo Bautista, were attended by presidents of various farmers' associations and active corn farmers in every city and municipality in Batangas Province.
Bautista said that the training aimed to equip corn farmers with the necessary skills and knowledge to improve their crop yield and effectively manage pests.
He emphasized the importance of implementing sustainable farming practices and utilizing integrated pest management techniques to minimize the use of harmful chemicals.
Resource speaker Bryan Plata, who came from Regional Crop Protection Center 4 of the Department of Agriculture, discussed Pest and disease Management, while Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) for Corn was the topic shared by Batangas GAP Focal Person Melinda Mendoza.
The problems and trials faced by farmers from planting to harvesting corn were also a topic here to provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges in corn production.
Plata highlighted the importance of proper pest and disease management strategies to ensure healthy crop growth, while Mendoza emphasized the significance of implementing GAP to enhance productivity and reduce environmental impact.
The discussions shed light on the various obstacles farmers encounter throughout the entire corn cultivation process, fostering a deeper appreciation for their resilience and dedication to sustaining this vital agricultural sector.
According to Francisco Tegon, president of the Batangas City Corn Growers' Association, who was among those who attended, the said training is important because it is a great help to Batangueño farmers, especially since the country is lacking in corn supply.
Tegon emphasized that the training provided valuable insights and techniques to improve corn cultivation practices, ultimately increasing crop yield and addressing the supply shortage.
He further highlighted the significance of supporting local farmers in Batangas City, as their efforts play a crucial role in ensuring food security and promoting economic growth in the region.
He was also very grateful to the Provincial Government of Batangas, led by Gov. Hermilando Mandanas, for having such programs and for continuing to increase the level of agriculture in the province.
