ANTIPOLO CITY, Rizal - Educators and officers from 11 schools in the Department of Education-Rizal Division recently gathered for School Edible Landscaping for Entrepreneurship (SEL4E) Training.
The training was held from August 7 to 11, 2023, at Los Baños, Laguna, and Pililla, Rizal, both online and in person.
It aimed to equip educators and officers with the knowledge and skills to establish edible gardens in their respective schools, promoting entrepreneurship among students.
The training also focused on sustainable farming practices and the importance of environmental conservation.
A team of experts from UP Los Baños tackled the fundamentals, processes, and applications of edible landscaping during a recent webinar.
They emphasized the importance of incorporating both aesthetics and functionality into outdoor spaces by growing edible plants.
The experts also discussed various techniques, such as companion planting and vertical gardening, to maximize limited spaces and promote sustainable food production.
The educators from Rizal were welcomed by the training management team and SEARCA officials, led by Director Glenn Gregorio.
They expressed their gratitude for the educators' participation and emphasized the importance of their role in shaping the future of education in Rizal.
Books and other knowledge products from the center’s knowledge shop were turned over to the school representatives.
They were also given a tour of the SEARCA Hub for Agriculture and Rural Innovation for the Next Generation (SHARING) and other facilities at SEARCA.
This week-long training is the first component of the SEL4E Project, which intends to improve the nutrition and health of children and their families in Rizal province, Philippines, through multi-stakeholder participation.
It is being implemented by SEARCA with support from SynergyGroup Operations Inc. (SGOI) and Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc. (PSFI), and in collaboration with the Department of Education of Rizal and the Provincial Government of Rizal. (with reports from SEARCA)
