TAYABAS CITY, Quezon - August 13, known as "Trese de Agosto,” is a significant event that symbolizes Tayabas City's liberation and independence from Spanish rule. The people of Tayabas City commemorate this day with various activities and festivities to honor their ancestors' struggles and sacrifices for freedom.

The Cultural Heritage Preservation Office and Oplan Sagip Tulay (OST)-Tayabas Heritage Group Incorporated marked the event by hosting a forum about "Trese de Agosto" and its historical significance.

The discussion was held on August 12, 2023, on the second floor of Casa Comunidad de Tayabas, where local historians and experts were invited to share their knowledge and insights on the events leading up to the liberation, shedding light on the brave individuals who fought for Tayabas City's freedom.

According to Keissy Rayel, Vice Chairperson of OST Tayabas Heritage Group Inc. , the forum aimed to educate the community about the importance of "Trese de Agosto" in shaping the city's identity and instilling a sense of pride among its residents.

The event also provided an opportunity for attendees to engage in meaningful discussions and ask questions, fostering a deeper understanding of the historical significance of this pivotal moment in Tayabas City's history.

She also said that the forum was successful in bringing together people from different generations and backgrounds, creating a space for intergenerational dialogue and the exchange of ideas.

"This not only strengthened the community's connection to its history but also encouraged active participation in preserving and promoting its cultural heritage," she said.

Mark Anthony Glorioso, a Tayabas local, heritage advocate, numismatist, and current staff member of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), Jesse Robredo Museum, Naga City, delivered the keynote address.

Glorioso's talk was crucial in that it narrated the history of the Siege of Tayabas and presented original data that reveals or confirms that the province of Tayabas was entirely free from the hands of the Spaniards on August 13, 1898.

Necias Pataunia, a local historian, also gave his experience about their research on the history of Trese de Agosto and how it has shaped the identity of the people in Tayabas.

Pataunia highlighted the significance of preserving and sharing this historical event to ensure that future generations understand and appreciate their rich heritage.

He praised Glorioso for providing help with the research. "The long debate about what the true date should be to celebrate Tayabas' independence has come to an end," he remarked.

A reenactment or re-presentation of what transpired on "Trese de Agosto" was also staged, attended by officials led by Mayor Lovely Reynoso and Emmanuel Calairo, Chairman of the NHCP and several personalities.

Various organizations such as Concern Youth of Lalo (CYL), SUSI Ng Tayabas, Tayabas Mountaineer, Coro Migueleño, and some teachers of Southern Luzon State University attended the discussion.

A book by Glorioso was also launched during the event, titled "TRESE DE AGOSTO Ang Pagkukob sa Tayabas at ang Pagsuko ng Hukbong Kastila noong 1898."

The book by Glorioso provides a comprehensive account of the events that took place in Tayabas during the struggle for independence in 1898.

It sheds light on the significance of August 13th as a pivotal date in Tayabas' history and solidifies its recognition as the official day to celebrate the city's independence.

According to Glorioso , the book aims to educate readers about the lesser-known details of the battle that occurred in Tayabas and the subsequent surrender of the Spanish forces.

He said it delves into the bravery and sacrifices of the Filipino revolutionaries and highlights their role in shaping the city's identity and freedom.

"Through this book, readers will gain a deeper understanding of the events that unfolded on August 13th and how they have shaped Tayabas' history. Glorioso's research sheds light on the often overlooked contributions of the Filipino revolutionaries, ensuring that their bravery and sacrifices are not forgotten," he said.

He also mentioned that the book includes personal accounts and narratives from descendants of the revolutionaries, providing a unique and intimate perspective on the events.

Additionally, Glorioso's extensive research uncovers lesser-known details about the revolution and its impact on Tayabas, making it a valuable resource for historians and anyone interested in Philippine history.
