LUCENA CITY, Quezon - Quezon Governor Angelina "Helen" Tan and Senator Imelda Imee" Marcos informed the province's barangay health workers (BHWs) that the Sangguniang Panglalawigan is speeding up work on a proposed bill to improve BHWs benefits and rights.
The bill, once passed, will provide BHWs with better compensation, improved working conditions, and additional training opportunities to further enhance their skills and knowledge in providing healthcare services to their communities.
During the Barangay Health Workers (BHW) Convention 2023 on September 7, 2023, which was attended by 4,400 BHWs in the third and fourth districts, Governor Helen Tan emphasized the importance of the BHWs' dedication and commitment in delivering quality healthcare services to the community.
Governor Helen Tan also acknowledged that the BHWs will not be replaced once a new barangay captain is elected, as their role is crucial in maintaining the health and well-being of the community.
She assured the BHWs that their efforts will be recognized and supported and that they will continue to receive the necessary resources and training to effectively carry out their responsibilities.
“Hindi na mapapalitan ang mga BHWs kung sakaling magkaroon ng pagpapalit ng bagong kapitan sa barangay nila at magkakaroon na din ng health insurance at kaunting pinansyal na insentibo ang BHWs” added the Governor.
The governor asked the BHWs to conduct health profiling and registration for the residents.
She also encouraged the BHWs to actively participate in health education campaigns and promote preventive measures to improve the overall health of the community.
Meanwhile, Senator Imee Marcos announced that the Magna Carta of Barangay Health Workers is still being promoted in Congress and the Senate to become a full law.
The Magna Carta of Barangay Health Workers aims to provide comprehensive benefits and protection for BHWs, including increased compensation and access to training and development programs.
Senator Marcos emphasized the importance of recognizing the vital role that BHWs play in the healthcare system and ensuring their rights are upheld.
The senator also added that if this becomes law, the BHWs will have a monthly honorarium, hazard pay, food, and transportation allowances.
