GUMACA, Quezon - The mayor of Gumaca has recently initiated a campaign aimed at planting 100,000 mangrove trees in order to protect the coastal areas and promote biodiversity.
In celebration of the 123rd anniversary of the Philippine Civil Service, the local government personnel of Gumaca, led by Municipal Mayor Webster Letargo, recently participated in a tree-planting activity as part of their commitment to environmental sustainability.
The event sought not just to increase the number of mangrove trees but also to create community awareness about the need to maintain coastal ecosystems.
The mayor's call to action has received extensive community support, with volunteers working together to assure the success of this environmental project. 5,600 mangrove seedlings were planted along the coastal portions of Barangay Panikihan as part of its tree-growing activity.
This brings the mangrove population in the area to more than 100,000, which was the local government’s goal for the campaign. The increase in mangrove population is expected to provide a natural barrier against coastal erosion and protect the area's marine biodiversity.
The Department of Public Works and Highways, Philippine National Police, Gumaca Water District, Gumaca District Hospital, Bureau of Jail and Penology, Department of Agrarian Reform, and Bureau of Fire Protection are some of the government agencies and institutions that are present in Barangay Panikihan to support the local government's efforts in achieving their goal.
The students and teachers of Panikihan National High School and the officials of Barangay Panikihan participated in the said activity to show their support and commitment to the community.
