SARIAYA, Quezon - As the employment situation and economy here continue to flourish, Mayor Marcelo Gayeta has been working tirelessly to attract more businesses and investments for the residents while the town conversion of the municipality into a city is underway.
The mayor believes that by attracting more businesses and investments, the city will be able to generate more revenue, which can then be used to further enhance the quality of life for its residents.
The Sariaya Mayor's vision is to create a thriving urban center that can cater to the growing needs and aspirations of the residents, making it an ideal place to live, work, and invest in.
Under Republic Act 11683, which alters Section 450 of RA 7160, or the Local Government Code of 1991, it is easier for a municipality to apply to become a city. Local governments can now fully operationalize their functions by granting cityhood to qualifying municipalities.
However, Section 450 of the Local Government Code states that before a municipality or cluster of barangays (villages) can be converted into a component city, it must have an annual income of at least PHP100,000,000, a territory of at least 100 square kilometers, and a population of at least 150,000.
Gayeta has been actively collaborating with conglomerates and private investors to attract investments and secure funding for various development projects. With their support, the municipality will reach the required criteria set by the Local Government Code in no time.
Additionally, Gayeta has been implementing sustainable and inclusive policies to ensure the well-being and progress of its growing population, making it a prime candidate for conversion into a component city.
This transformation will not only bring about increased opportunities for job creation but also pave the way for improved infrastructure and services such as transportation, healthcare, and education.
According to Gayeta, the income of Sariaya may reach more than P150 million by 2023 due to the expected boost in economic activity and investments that will come with its conversion into a component city.
SMC and LGU offer livelihood programs in Sariaya
San Miguel Corportion (SMC) has been working closely with the local government unit (LGU) of Sariaya to implement various livelihood programs that aim to uplift the economic status of the community.
These programs include skills training, financial assistance, and support for small-scale businesses. Through these initiatives, SMC and the LGU are not only promoting entrepreneurship but also creating sustainable sources of income for the residents of Sariaya.
Alternative learning system (ALS) initiatives are also being created in the community to provide educational opportunities for out-of-school adolescents and adults.
Welders, heavy equipment operators, construction workers, carpenters, farmers, and food sector professionals are also available through SMC's local partner contractors and subsidiaries who provide training and employment opportunities for the residents.
Over 50 residents have recently graduated from ALS and skills training in Brgy. Catañas, Sariarya in Quezon Province on September 28, 2023 as a result of SMC's initiatives.
Aside from that, there is provision of free housing and land with amenities for those who have been relocated as a result of the land that will be used to build SMC's integrated food complex.
This ensures that not only are employment opportunities provided, but also support for the basic needs of individuals and their families who may have been affected by the construction of the complex.
Gayeta expressed that SMC's commitment to providing job opportunities and support for the local community is truly commendable.
He believes that this approach will not only help boost the local economy but also contribute to the overall development and well-being of the community.
The positive impact of SMC's commitment to the local community is evident in the increased opportunities and empowerment it has brought to the residents.
