BARAS, Rizal - World Tourism Day was recently celebrated in Baras, Rizal, with the aim of recognizing and honoring the exceptional skills and talent of the local "Sikaran" players, who have been instrumental in promoting tourism through their unique martial arts performances.
The event showcased incredible displays of agility, strength, and precision by the local "Sikaran" players from Sikaran Training Camps and headquarters. The performances left the audience in awe and garnered widespread appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of the region.
This is a collaborative effort by the local government, Liga ng Barangay, Department of Education (DepEd), and various Sikran organizations that unite to promote and preserve the traditional martial arts of "Sikaran".
Baras Mayor Wilfredo Robles led the opening ceremony of the event, expressing his gratitude to the "Sikaran" players for their dedication to showcasing their martial arts skills.
He emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting local traditions, as they play a vital role in attracting visitors and boosting the local economy.
The event featured various competitions and demonstrations, allowing both locals and tourists to appreciate the rich cultural heritage of Baras through the art of "Sikaran".
According to the local government, Baras is ‘Home of Sikaran”, and they are committed to supporting and nurturing the growth of this martial art form.
They believe that by showcasing "Sikaran" to the world, they can put Baras on the map as a must-visit destination for cultural enthusiasts and martial arts practitioners alike.
The World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines, the Global Sikaran Federation, the United Sikaran Alliance, the Universal Sikaran of the Philippines, and groups from Tanay, Pililla, Morong, Binangonan, Gumaca, and Bulacan are the organizations that participated in the exhibition.
