TAYTAY, Rizal - Taytay Mayor Allan De Leon expresses his unwavering commitment to providing continuous assistance and support to the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who are currently caught in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
In a recent official statement of the mayor, he assures the OFWs and their families that the local government of Taytay is closely monitoring the situation, and we are ready to provide immediate support to those who will be affected.
"The Municipal Government of Taytay expresses its deepest concern to the victims and its heartfelt sympathies to those who have lost family members, comrades, and friends in the conflict between Israel and Hamas," the statement read.
The mayor also emphasizes that the municipality is joining the international community's call to ensure the safety of all civilians in the region and to provide immediate resolve to further reduce the loss of life and property damage caused by the ensuing conflict.
Meanwhile, on his official X account, Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Enrique Manalo confirmed on October 11, 2023, the killing of two Filipino workers in Israel due to the ongoing conflict.
Secretary Manalo expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and assured that the DFA is closely coordinating with Israeli authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of all Filipino nationals in the region.
The details of the incident and the identities of the victims have not been disclosed yet. The DFA is also providing assistance to the affected families and facilitating repatriation for those who wish to return to the Philippines.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said the Philippine government would remain resolute in the pursuit of lasting peace, in line with United Nations resolutions and international laws, to ensure the safety and well-being of all Filipino nationals in the region.
The government is actively coordinating with international partners and neighboring countries to address the situation and prevent the further escalation of violence. Additionally, efforts are being made to enhance security measures and provide necessary support to Filipino communities abroad.
30,000 Filipinos in Israel and 137 in Gaza, according to the latest DFA data, are currently being closely monitored and provided with assistance by the Philippine government.
According to the Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv's most recent dispatch, issued on October 11, at least six Filipinos remain unaccounted for in Israel, and efforts are underway to locate and assure their safety.
The embassy is working closely with local authorities and continuously coordinating with Filipino community leaders to gather information and provide necessary assistance to those affected by the situation.
The DFA said that due to the escalating violence and deteriorating security situation in Gaza, approximately 38 Filipinos are seeking repatriation.
Marcos previously directed the Department of Migrant Workers and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration to track down and account for all OFWs and their families in Israel.
He also ordered that every agency involved in ensuring the safety of OFWs and the Filipino community collaborate closely with the Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv and the Migrant Workers Office in Israel.
