LUCENA CITY, Quezon - Statistics provide crucial data and insights that enable policymakers to understand the current state of affairs and identify trends, gaps, and areas for improvement. They help in measuring progress towards goals and evaluating the impact of policies and interventions.

As part of National Statistics Month, which aims to raise awareness among residents about how important statistics play in their daily lives, Provincial Statistics Officer (PSO) Airene Pucyutan of Philippine Statistics Authority of Quezon Provicne (PSA Quezon) discussed the importance of using statistics to inform evidence-based policies and decision-making in the Kapihan sa PIA of the Philippine Information Agency on October 25, 2023.

The annual commemoration of National Statistics Month, according to Pucyutan, is a way to provide programs and activities that highlight the importance of statistics in national development. It serves as an opportunity for stakeholders to come together and discuss the role of statistics in addressing current challenges and identifying areas for improvement.

She emphasized that statistics serve as a reliable tool for policymakers to assess the effectiveness of existing policies and make informed decisions for the future, and the PSA is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating statistical information in the country.

The PSA ensures that accurate and reliable data is available to support various sectors such as education, health, economics, and social development. Dissemination is also done through various platforms, such as reports, publications, and online databases, to ensure accessibility for policymakers, researchers, and the general public.

She said they focus on raising awareness among students so that, at a young age, they understand the importance of data and statistics in shaping policies and making informed decisions. Equipping students with statistical literacy, the PSA aims to cultivate a generation of future policymakers who can effectively utilize data-driven insights to address societal challenges and drive progress in the Philippines.

The summary inflation rate for Lucena City for the month of September is reported by PSA in the Kapihan sa PIA which is moderated by its head, Lito Giron, and attended by media practitioners from Quezon province. From 3.2 percent in August, Lucena City's inflation rate increased to 4.0 percent. Comparing this to the prior month, there has been a huge increase.

The uptrend in the inflation rate of Lucena City was primarily due to higher inflation in housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels at 0.3 percent in September 2023, up from -2.6 percent in the previous month. This was followed by food and non-alcoholic beverages at 5.5 percent, up from 4.6 percent. Restaurants and accommodation services were the third main source of accelaration for the inflation in September 2023, with an 8.2 percent annual growth rate from 7.2 percent in August 2023.

Other contributing factors to the uptrend in inflation rate in Lucena City during September 2023 include the increase in prices of transportation and communication services, which rose by 2.1 percent compared to the previous month. The cost of education also experienced a slight increase, contributing to the overall inflationary pressure in the city. (QuillBot)

Meanwhile, PSA Quezon made it to the Top 15 Best Performing Provinces, being in 8th place among 86 provincial statistical offices during the 2022 PSA Awards held in Quezon City. On September 13, 2023, Pucyutan received the plaque of recognition during the 2022 PSA Awards Night. This recognition highlights the province's commitment to excellence in providing accurate and reliable statistical data.

In addition, PSA Quezon ranked 3rd in the Information Dissemination category, 4th in Civil Registration, and received another recognition for successfully accomplishing the activities of the Provincial Product Accounts as one of the pilot provinces in 2022.

The PSA Awards are an incentive system aimed at ensuring timely delivery of quality outputs in the implementation of PSA's mandated activities. The activity was conducted as part of the PSA 10th Anniversary celebration with the theme "PSA@10: Providing Quality Services through Digital Transformation". (with reports from PSA Quezon)
