LUCENA CITY, Quezon - One effective way to capacitate person with disabilities (PWD) is by providing them with legal awareness. The Provincial Legal Office of Quezon province has recognized this and conducted a seminar on November 14, 2023, to educate and empower PWDs.
According to Atty. Julienne Therese Salvacion, Acting Provincial Legal Officer, "Pathways to Equality: Seminar on Capacitating PWDs in Quezon Province through Legal Awareness," aimed to enhance PWDs understanding of their rights and protections under the law, ensuring that they can advocate for themselves and access the necessary support and resources available to them.
She emphasized that raising legal awareness and capacitating PWDs is a tool that can help them navigate through various challenges and barriers they may encounter in their daily lives. Equipping individuals with knowledge about their rights, they are empowered to assert themselves and demand equal opportunities and inclusion in society.
On the other hand, Sonia Leyson, Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) head, said that the role of the Legal President of the Federation of PWDs is to remind the government and other stakeholders of their responsibilities in ensuring the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities.
This includes advocating for the implementation of policies and programs that address the specific needs of this marginalized sector, such as accessible infrastructure and inclusive education. Education is crucial in raising awareness about the rights and capabilities of persons with disabilities, as well as promoting inclusivity and acceptance in society.
Quezon Governor Angelina "Helen" Tan expressed her gratitude to the Provincial Legal Office for their continuous efforts in championing the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities. She emphasized the importance of knowing the rights of people with disabilities and ensuring that they are protected and upheld.
Tan highlighted that she is the reason why mandatory PhilHealth coverage for persons with disabilities was implemented in the province. She believes that access to healthcare is a fundamental right and should not be denied to anyone, regardless of their abilities.
Tan also stated that she is working to improve all local government services to ensure that people with disabilities have equal access to school, employment, and social services. She aims to create an inclusive and supportive environment where they can thrive and contribute to the community.
Elected officers of the Quezon Provincial Federation of Persons with Disabilities have taken oaths before Governor Tan during a ceremony, pledging their commitment to advocate for the rights and welfare of individuals with disabilities.
The seminar was attended by officers of the PWD Affairs Office and the Municipal President of the Federation of PWDs from different municipalities and cities in Quezon Province, as well as representatives from various government agencies and non-government organizations.
