LUCBAN, Quezon - A pilot village was established here to help farmers increase their revenue by utilizing protective farming technology and post-harvest management measures. The village aims to provide farmers with training and resources to adopt sustainable agricultural practices.
The completion ceremony for the pilot village project was held on December 5, 2023, by the Korea Partnership for Innovation in Agriculture (KOPIA), led by Dr. Kyuseong Lee, in cooperation with its partners, the local government unit (LGU) of Lucban, Quezon, and the Bureau of Plant Industry-Los Baños Center.
Dr. Kyuseong Lee said in a speech that the pilot village project is a significant step towards empowering farmers and promoting sustainable agriculture in the region. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between government agencies, research institutions, and local communities to ensure the success and scalability of such initiatives.
In addition, Dr. Lee expressed his optimism that the knowledge and practices gained from this project will be shared with other farming communities, leading to a wider adoption of sustainable agricultural practices across the country.
The completion ceremony marked the completion of the project's nine (9) greenhouses and one (1) postharvest facility at Sitio Baluguinan, Barangay Kulapi, Lucban Quezon, Lucban, Quezon. The Pilot Village Project Through the Establishment of Protective Cultivation and Postharvest Management of Vegetables in the Philippines was KOPIA's initiative to introduce modern and sustainable agricultural practices in the country.
This completion ceremony also highlights how collaborations across many sectors, both national and international, may truly help the primary beneficiaries, especially farmers, improve their livelihoods and contribute to the overall development of the agricultural sector.
The project's greenhouses and postharvest facility will provide farmers with access to advanced technology and knowledge, enabling them to grow high-quality vegetables all year round and reduce postharvest losses. KOPIA-SIPAG Postharvest and Greenhouse Facilities Completion Ceremonies and Pre-Membership Education Seminar were also held at the KOPIA-SIPAG Farmers Village.
Present during the ceremony were Lucban Mayor Agustin “Tenten” M. Villaverde, Dr. Kyuseong Lee, Director of the KOPIA Philippines Center; and Dr. Herminigilda A. Gabertan, BPI Assistant Director, all of whom represent our partners in this project.
Mayor Villaverde expresses his gratitude for the establishment of the KOPIA-SIPAG Farmers Village in Lucban. He emphasizes the importance of sustainable agriculture and how this project will benefit the local community by providing a steady supply of fresh vegetables and reducing food waste.
