BATANGAS CITY - A major step forward in the city's efforts to address its wastewater management challenges took place on December 5, 2023, when the Batangas City septage treatment plant was blessed and officially inaugurated in Barangay San Jose Sico.
This complies with the requirements of the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004, also known as Republic Act 9275, which mandates the establishment of a septage management system in all local government units (LGUs).
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is putting this law into practice with the intention of addressing different issues pertaining to contaminated water and guaranteeing the provision of clean water supplies.
Vergel Paule, the head of PrimeWater Infrastructure Corp.'s sanitation and wastewater division, says that draining a home's septic tank and sending the contents to a facility for treatment is one method of safeguarding the water supply.
He stated that the sediments will be sorted and transported out by a DENR-accredited contractor, while the water (liquid) squeezed by them will go through the Department Administrative Order 2016 process with standard criteria and pass to Class C standards.
The city will be divided into five zones, with desludging or absorption scheduled every five years to treat the sewage. Consumers will pay it in installments over a five-year period. Prior to this, PrimeWater conducted an Information Education Campaign (IEC) among the barangays, describing the route to be followed, the timeframe, and assuring the program's safety. They plan to start operations in January 2024.
On the occasion, Mayor Beverley Dimacuha and Congressman Marvey Marino represented former Councilor Serge Atienza, emphasizing the message that the local government's collaboration with PrimeWater and Batangas City Water District (BCWD) has borne fruit in order to protect the environment. as well as the people' health. BCWD BOD Chairman Wilfrido Jacinto expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the local government's assistance in making the facility a reality.
